Tree Pruning FAQs

It’s best to start when your tree is young. Young trees are more responsive to structural shaping, which helps set them up for strong, healthy growth in the future.
DIY pruning can lead to improper cuts that stress your trees, spread disease, or cause structural damage. It can also be dangerous without proper gear or training. Hiring certified arborists protects your trees – and your safety.
We go to great lengths to avoid damaging your property or remaining landscape. Our team uses careful techniques and the right equipment to safeguard your landscape and structures while we work.
“Trimming” is often used to describe aesthetic shaping, while “pruning” refers to strategic cuts that support tree health, structure, and safety. Pruning is the industry standard, and we prioritize it for long-term health.
No, unless we’re removing a tree entirely. Using spikes on live trees can cause wounds that invite pests or disease. We use the bucket truck when possible – and hand climb the tree if not – to safely access the canopy without harming the tree.
Not if you don’t want to be! As long as we’ve confirmed access and the plan in advance, you can go about your day.
ISA Certification means your arborist has met the highest standards of arboriculture knowledge and ethics, including extensive experience and continuing education. It’s a mark of trusted, science-based care.
Most mature trees benefit from pruning every 3–5 years, but it depends on the species, age, and condition. Young trees may need more frequent shaping to encourage strong structure.
It depends on the tree. We can prune year round, but certain trees like fruit trees are best pruned in the winter to prevent disease spread. The great news is, our Certified Arborists can evaluate trees any time of year and create a properly-timed plan to make sure you are doing the best thing at the right time for your trees.
There are specific signs dead branches display in the winter vs live branches and our expert arborists are well-trained to tell the difference. Occasionally, if a tree is stressed in late winter or early spring, what was alive in the winter, may not leaf out in the summer, but this is less common.
