Emerald Ash Borer Treatment in Broomfield & the Front Range

Since its introduction to the U.S. in 2002, the emerald ash borer devastated ash tree populations – killing tens of millions of trees across the country. Without treatment, this invasive pest has an almost 100% fatality rate. The good news: We have a treatment that can prevent infestation. If your tree is already infested at an early stage, this same treatment can stop the infestation and prevent safety risks that come with tree health deterioration.

Safety-Focused

Safety is our priority. If your tree is infested with EAB, we’ll help you determine the safest option – whether that’s treatment or removal.

How to Tell if Your Tree is Infected by Emerald Ash Borer

Watch for telltale signs of EAB, including:

  • S-shaped galleries (tunnels) beneath the bark
  • D-shaped holes left behind when the beetles exit the tree

The following signs could be caused by EAB or another tree issue:

  • Thinning canopy
  • Tip die back (gradual death of tree tissue that starts at the tips and continues inward)
  • Increased woodpecker activity or damage (woodpeckers eat EAB larvae)

A certified arborist can help you determine the culprit and decide whether your tree can be treated or needs to be removed.

If you’re seeing signs of infestation, your tree needs a professional checkup.

We’ll assess your tree, identify the issue, and let you know if treatment is still possible – or if removal is the safest option.

Emerald Ash Borer Treatment FAQs

DIY treatments often miss the mark – either in timing, dosage, or product quality. Certified Arborists use proven treatments and professional techniques that ensure long-term effectiveness. Improper treatment can leave your tree vulnerable and may even accelerate decline.
For trees that are 8-10 inches in diameter and larger, we use trunk-injection treatments that deliver insecticide directly into the tree’s vascular system. This method is minimally invasive, doesn’t harm surrounding plants or soil, and offers protection for up to two years. For smaller trees, we use soil injection, which is a more localized, targeted approach than spraying.
Yes. When applied by a certified arborist, injection treatments are contained within the tree – and keep people, pets, and pollinators safe. Unlike sprays, there’s no drift or residue left behind. As a precautionary measure, we typically recommend keeping pets and kids away from the treatment area for 30 minutes (until it’s completely dry).
Not if you don’t want to be! As long as we’ve confirmed access and the plan in advance, you can go about your day.
ISA Certification means your arborist has met the highest standards of arboriculture knowledge and ethics, including extensive experience and continuing education. It’s a mark of trusted, science-based care.
Before your tree is infested with EAB. EAB is found throughout our service area, so prevention is the best way to ensure the highest rate of success to keep your ash tree safe from EAB; if you get an infestation and it goes unnoticed, it can quickly kill your tree. If you have an EAB infestation, it’s essential to treat your trees ASAP, ideally before it develops noticeable signs of an infestation. This is why we recommend regular tree care – so certified arborists can catch infestations before it’s too late.
In many cases, yes – if the infestation is caught early. Once more than 25-50% of the canopy is lost, removal is often the only safe option. That’s why early detection and quick treatment are critical.
Without treatment, infested ash trees usually die within 2–5 years. They become brittle, hazardous, and expensive to remove. Treatment is more affordable and safer than removal after the tree is severely impacted or dead.
Most treatments are effective for one to two years, depending on the product and tree health. We’ll recommend a schedule based on your tree’s size, condition, and your area’s current infestation risk.
We use Mectinite (emamectin benzoate) injected directly into the tree using Rainbow’s Q-Connect system. Our arborists prefer this product and system over others out there because it is more precise, causes less damage to the tree, and does not use plastic plugs that are left behind in the tree.
